The Good News

Two new large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the UK can store enough electricity to power approximately 200,000 homes for two hours.

Harmony Energy Income Trust plc (HEIT) has recently brought two large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) online in the UK. The Wormald Green BESS in Yorkshire, with a capacity of 33 MW / 66 MWh, and the Hawthorn Pit BESS in County Durham, at 49.9 MW / 99.8 MWh, have now been energised. Together, these projects can store enough electricity to power approximately 200,000 homes for two hours.

Both systems utilise Envision Energy’s advanced 2-hour duration, liquid-cooled storage technology. These energy storage solutions support energy trading, capacity services, and frequency regulation, marking Envision Energy’s first operational battery installations in Great Britain.

This collaboration with HEIT is a milestone for both companies.

Project Background

Developed by Harmony Energy Limited, the projects are the first BESS assets to be optimised by oil and gas company BP, leveraging the digital energy platform Open Energi. Acquired by BP in 2021, Open Energi’s software provides real-time insights and facilitates decision-making that connects these storage assets with the power markets through BP’s trading business.

Quotes Relating to the Project

“The energisation of Hawthorn Pit and Wormald Green represents another significant step in our mission to help power a sustainable future. To have completed construction of all eight projects in the portfolio since the IPO of HEIT plc in late 2021 is a remarkable achievement and is testament to the skills and dedication of our key suppliers, not least Envision Energy, as well as the strong project management and delivery capabilities of the team at Harmony Energy. Our portfolio is the second largest in Great Britain by MW, and the largest portfolio with exclusively 2-hour duration technology. It’s been a pleasure to work with Envision Energy on these two projects.” - Max Slade, Director of Harmony Energy Advisors Limited.
Marking their first live batteries in Great Britain, Mark Walton-Hayfield, Senior Director of Envision Energy BESS, said: “We are thrilled to see our first energy storage systems in the UK come online, marking a significant milestone in Envision Energy’s global mission to accelerate the energy transition. This successful energisation, in partnership with HEIT, demonstrates the robustness and reliability of our energy storage systems. We are committed to supporting GB’s decarbonisation goals and are excited to continue collaborating with partners like HEIT who share our vision for a sustainable energy future.”
