Manchester City Football Club Plans To Go Solar

Published on
July 26, 2024

The Good News -

Manchester City Football Club is seeking planning permission from Manchester City Council to install 10,887 solar panels at its training facility and the Joie Stadium. These panels are expected to generate up to 4.39 MWh of energy annually - enough to power over 2,000 homes.

This project aims to make Manchester City one of the largest producers of renewable energy in world football.

Project Background -

The planned installation will include 3,800 panels over footpaths and pitch-side areas at the City Football Academy, 3,000 panels on the roof of the Joie Stadium, and 3,942 panels on other buildings on the same site. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will be managed by Manchester-based renewable energy developer Clearvolt.

Quotes Relating to the Project -

“Over many years, we have adopted increasingly sustainable practices across the Club, ranging from the removal of all single-use plastic on a matchday to reusing rainwater and recycling more than 70% of our waste.
“As we look ahead on our roadmap to being net carbon zero by 2030, we know that the production and consumption of renewable energy has an incredibly important role to play, which is why we are delighted at the prospect of installing over 10,800 solar panels at our home in Manchester.” - Pete Bradshaw, Manchester City’s Director of Sustainability.

This initiative builds on the club's existing commitment to renewable energy, which includes purchasing 100% renewable electricity for the past eight years. The City Football Academy has already achieved the gold standard under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design guidelines.

Other football teams have also embraced solar power - in 2022, Turkish club Galatasaray set a Guinness World Record by installing thousands of solar panels on its stadium roof, producing 4.2 megawatts from 10,404 panels.
